Featured Indicator No. 9

August 2010

Featured Indicator: Total New England Public Universities R&D Expenditures per Enrolled Student in Science & Engineering - 2008

This indicator shows the total research and development expenditures per enrolled student in the sciences and engineering fields at the state universities in New England in 2008.  In addition to having the highest total R&D expenditures at $225,904,000 in 2008, the University of Connecticut (all campuses) leads the way with $9,307,000 in R&D expenditures per student for 2008.  In second place is the University of Vermont ($9,017,000) followed by the University of Maine ($8,042,000).

Why this is significant

Universities and colleges are a major source of knowledge and research. In this knowledge-based economy, businesses increasingly seek to develop partnerships with research-oriented universities and colleges to develop, test and commercialize innovative products and services. A healthy economy also benefits from knowledge workers that begin their advanced learning and research experiences at universities and colleges. This requires investments in R&D at universities and colleges.
