- Since 1976 Bruce Hensler has actively served as a firefighter with career, volunteer, and paid-call fire departments in Maine, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. His fulltime fire career started with the Bureau of Fire in McKeesport, PA. Later he was an assistant fire chief in Waterville (ME) and the fire chief of Camden, Maine. He currently serves with the Rockport Fire Department as a paid-call lieutenant.
- He wrote a book on nineteenth-century urban fires and the role they played in shaping urban planning, fire insurance underwriting, and the modern fire service.
- The book titled, Crucible of Fire: Nineteenth Century Urban Fires and the Making of the Modern Fire Service will be published by Potomac Books late in 2010.
